We’ve all seen the TV episodes where the character bends over and can’t get up. While it’s easy to see the humor on TV it’s far from funny when you’re facing the reality of a hot back yourself.
Here is a quick go to list of the Do’s & Don’ts when you find yourself in this situation:
Do:
- Call us right away, the earlier you can see the chiropractor the better, there are many treatments we can preform to start cooling down a hot back.
- Ice, cool is going to be your best friend. Make sure to ice no longer than 15minutes at a time and do not make direct contact to the skin with the ice pack
- Rest, working out or lifting with a hot back can cause further damage
- Take an anti-inflammatory, this will help calm those muscles. If you are unsure of what to take talk to the Dr. for his recommendations.
- Ask for help, have friends or family help with lifting and reaching
Don’t:
- Apply heat, while heat may feel good it is not helping calm those muscles. If you must apply heat always do it for very short periods and follow with ice
- Delay care, many people want to “wait” and see how it does. While the back might calm down temporarily, something as simple as bending down to pick up an item can cause it to flair again. Getting immediate care is important to keep this from happening.
- Move or twist in any position that causes further pain. If laying on your back try putting pillows under your knees to take pressure off the back. If the side is more comfortable try placing a pillow between your knees.
Bottom line: It is always best to work with a professional to quickly resolve your back pain and help prevent further episodes.
